I also believe that these worm drives use brass or bronze worms so the EP adds found in most gear oils are probably not ideal. Go low sulfur if possible, as many use a brass worm gear to turn the auger spur gear. 90 oil will move just fine in this application even in extreme cold. You're not trying to pump it through lines, it's just got to let the gears in there turn. Webb6 sep. 2015 · The Gilson oil baths use SAE 30 preferably non detergent. For snow encrusted winter use you don't want anything too viscous. The same gear train uses leaded SAE1 40 in tilling applications. They did have bronze worm wheels. In an inquiry with Braden winch years ago we came up with 600W gear oil. From memory, I believe they had origionally used a lubricant that contained lead, but that became an environmental issue.
